I've Done It AGAIN!

...Caused a controversy with my opinion.

We have a low railroad bridge in our town. For a very long time the clearance was 14 feet. That was low enough as it was, but the highway underneath had drainage problems so TX DOT - the state highway department - raised the level of the highway level with the curbs. Now the clearance is only 13 feet 7 inches.

Guess how many high loads still try to go under the bridge?! It is really amazing! Now we have signs at all points of the compass on the highways coming into town in plenty of time to turn around and take a detour. Still...loads hit the bridge. The worst culprits are the log haulers. They (as are other industries in the trucking business) are paid by the weight of the load, so they pile on another log or two.

My question is "How hard is it to put a tape measure on the load?!"

On our local newspaper's Facebook page, it was reported that on Monday, a guy hauling a piece of equipment (for the log industry) didn't just hit the bridge. Thank God no one was in the other lane.

People were blaming the highway department and the railroad. I basically commented that being from a truck driving family - the fault was the driver's and the driver's alone.

(Note not in my FB comment: After all the bridge does not rise and fall with the pull of the moon!)

OH MY GOODNESS! You would've thought I'd called him a murderer!! I didn't realize that I was being talked about nastily until I was showing someone here at the courthouse the photo the paper posted. Then I saw the comments - a woman (cousin/sister/something) took umbrage that I dare think it was the driver's fault. Then commented that someone who works for the county has no business commenting.

The county has no dog in this hunt. The bridge is within city limits. The highway is a state highway. The bridge is owned by the railroad. I did NOT comment as a county employee. I commented as being in a truckdriving family.

ARGGHHH!!! No one has even said whether the driver admitted being at fault. Of course, we all know whose name the ticket was issued in!

The shame of it is...in about 2001 or 2002 a long hauler hit the bridge and knocked part of his load off his trailer. It landed on top of a jeep driven by a young man who had been married less than a year. He was killed instantly leaving a widow and two small stepchildren to mourn him along with his friends and the rest of his family.

A wrongful death lawsuit was considered, then the mother found out about the driver. He accepted responsibility and was taking it extremely hard - could not work and was barely functioning. In addition, log haulers and the indepent owners of the trucks/log yard/etc. are not rich people. She said that money would not bring back her son and she refused to file the lawsuit.

The point is - the driver took responsibility.

My dad, all three brothers, and my first husband were all truckdrivers. I imagine they had well over 150 years combined experience between them. One brother is still 'trucking.' NOT ONE OF THEM ever swiped a load off their trucks driving under low bridges!

My uncle did. He hauled a few loads of logs. He did hit the bridge with his last load and knocked off a couple of logs. Thank God no one was near enough to be hit. He got out of the log business real quick. He accepted responsiblity.

I decided I needed to label this C.O.W. - Cranky Old Woman

Now - as soon as my boss returns from continuing education classes, I've got to fess up about the FB post. I will be removing my place of employment from my profile in the near future...but not just yet.

P.S. Found out that the driver received not one but three tickets! I know you are all totally surprised. Now - who was at fault?

Driver's Ed 101 Revisited and Edited

1. If you drive up behind a truck...NO not a pickup...a real, full-grown truck...one of those that hauls freight (as in everything you own!!), can you see the driver's mirrors? The mirrors that stick out to the right and left on their doors? No? Then guess what? THEY CAN'T SEE YOU EITHER!! Back off!

2. If you have a handicapped placard hanging from your rear-view mirror in the center of your windshield - especially if you are in Texas - take it down and read it. There will be mention not to drive with the placard dangling from your rear-view mirror! Depending on several different factors, you could pretty much hide a Mack truck behind that sucker.

3. Slower traffic keep right. Doesn't matter if there are signs posted to do so or not. It's common courtesy. If you are slower than the flow of traffic, ESPECIALLY if you are driving 10-20 mph below the posted speed...or lower...arrggghhhh...please get in the right hand lane.

Ducky aka my son commented: In your response to #3: In the state of Texas, if driving on a State Highway or Farm to Market (FM for those who don't know), it is against the law to impede the flow of traffic in the inside lane. Furthermore, if the road/hwy is only one lane each direction and you are moving slower than the flow of traffic, irregardless (sp) of speed limit, it is your legal obligation to move over to the shoulder/side of the rode to allow faster moving traffic to pass. Thought I'd share a tidbit I learned while working at DCSO.

4. If you come to a crossroad and do not have a Stop sign but they do...YOU DO NOT STOP! Coming up to a Yield sign? Start looking before you get there. They are generally located a Y's where the visibility is good. If nothing is coming, you do not have to stop.

5. If driving scares you, then by all means puleeze park your vehicle in the driveway/carport/garage and ask someone else to drive you. I remember driving my elderly neighbors around whenever they needed to go to town...two different households! I especially enjoyed driving "Aunt" Lena to run her errands...because I got to drive her 1951 Chevrolet 2-door coupe with the factory visor! The 1951 Chevrolet 2-door coupe I learned to drive on did not have the visor...so I felt like I was "uptown" driving hers. :-D

For those of you fully capable of driving, if you have a neighbor who has no business driving any more and their family is to chicken to do anything about it, offer your services as their chauffeur for free. Believe me...you will be blessed from their knowledge and wisdom.

6. Also from Ducky: My previous comment is classified as part of the "Texas Highway Courtesy" laws. Another part of that law is when ANY emergency vehicle is approaching behind you running full code (lights and sirens) you HAVE to pull over, stop, and let them pass before continuing down the corridor. This law applies to ALL roads, streets, highways, etc in the state of Texas.

7. More from me!! If you are passing one of those big trucks, aka 18-wheelers, NOT pickup - get around it! Don't dawdle along beside it. You see those big wheels and tires? When...not IF because eventually every truck out there is going to shed a tire!...GET AROUND IT! Did the driver speed up? You either speed up or drop back behind the truck. (Refer back to #1 please.) Listen to me! Daddy's occupation on my birth certificate is listed as "Truckdriver."

8. If you're on a 4-lane yard and there's a vehicle on the shoulder of the road...if you in the outside lane...if you can, move to the center lane. If you can't move over or are on a 2-lane road, slow down a bit.

9. I forgot about motorcycles!!!
Riders...Wear a helmet and proper riding gear!
Don't get stoopid
Remember - if you collide with anything bigger, YOU are most likely going to be the loser!!

Everybody else...DO NOT RUN OVER A MOTORCYCLE!!!
Do not pull out in front of a motorcycle.
Do not stop quickly in front of a motorcycle.
Don't get stoopid!
Remember - if you collide with a motorcycle, you may kill someone!

10. Funeral processions in Texas - Generally the hearse has its headlights on as does every vehicle in the procession on their way from the services to the cemetery. In rural areas especially, if you see them coming toward you...pull over out of respect for their loss. Two-lane...head to the shoulder and stop. Four-lane...same thing. Probably the only time you do not do this is on an interstate...and of course in cities.

C .O.W.

I must be in SEVERE estrogen deprived mode.

I am so ticked off I can't even find my regular C.O.W. (Cranky Old Woman) photo...but I found this one of a Highland cow.

When "this" happened I got so mad my eyes crossed, and I couldn't see straight.

We are nearing the end of a hot and heavy school bond election. Having subbed for our school district for five years and knowing first-hand the condition of our schools...I am voting Yes.

Someone on a forum put together a slide showing how much our school district is spending per student compared to what other school districts are spending per student. (I know...that's kind of like comparing what I spend at the grocery store to what YOU spend at the grocery store...but we won't go there.) Our maintenance is higher than those same school districts he is using for comparison...so I ask...Do you think that the higher maintenance cost has anything to do with the higher cost per student?

He replied back...
"When you imagine maintenance costs what do you think is included?"

Imagine?

IMAGINE?

Like I am JUST a woman and JUST a housewife and simply cannot understand something as complicated as maintenance?

I * M * A * G * I * N * E ????!!!!!

To say I am a bit ticked off is putting it extremely mild.

I replied back that after five years of subbing for our school district that I did not IMAGINE the gas leaks in the chemistry lab. I did not IMAGINE the electric short that vacated the class I was subbing in until they could trace the problem. I did not IMAGINE plumbing failures. I did not IMAGINE...etc.

Grrrr....

C.O.W. Alert! C.O.W. Alert!

Cranky Old Woman Alert!

C.O.W. #3 Poor, poor Sam. He started worrying about our Saturday Easter dinner leftovers Saturday evening!

C.O.W. #2 Has anyone ever asked you to show them how to do something...for instance...on Facebook. And you tell them, "There may be more than one way to do this, but this is how I do it." Then griped because of the wording when the task was complete. Even after being told...I didn't design this, call that guy...the person was still pissed because it should've been "this way."

I saved the BEST for last!

C.O.W. #1 Some idiot walked into our little one-person public library and pulled a gun on the librarian - Earlene - my best friend! He stole the DONATION jar! From the LIBRARY!! With a GUN! NO MASK!!! What an idiot! He even threatened to kill her if she called the police. Well...DUH! Did he really think she wouldn't?!

I talked her this morning after I found out about the robbery. She had a pretty good description of him. Since he was a young man...I suggested looking at the last few high school annuals. Report here already: http://www.kltv.com/

Update: They caught him the same day! He was at WalMart 25 miles away trying to pay for a purchase with all change!

ARRGGGGHHHHHH!

Cranky Old Woman time...I've been on the automated phone system with the Social Security Administration following a phone call from Mama. The rural route mail carrier is circling her incorrect address...from before the enhanced 911 calling system went into effect. She tried calling SSAs 1-800 number. The automated hussy inside the phone could not understand Mama's "Shirley. S H I R L E Y." So...I told Mama I would give it a try. First time...something was wrong with the information. I tried again leaving off her maiden name because she probably did not get a Social Security card until after she and Daddy married. That didn't work either. Heaven forbid a human being comes on the line! 45 minutes later...no luck at all. So...I get on the computer and try it. Nope. Something is still not jiving with the information SSA has. So it looks as if my poor decrepit mother is going to have to go to the nearest SSA office. Sigh.

I Do NOT Understand

Cranky Old Woman time...On a forum that I frequent, I related a recent incident. I ate at Chicken Express a couple/three weeks back (and loved every grease laden morsel). I started visiting with another diner, and she mentioned the receipt. I looked. There was a Bible verse printed at the bottom. I thought Bravo for the owner! He came around and asked about our meal. It was good, and I told him that we both appreciated the Bible verse. He said that a week before he did the same thing...visited with the diners and asked if everything was okay. A woman said No. That she was offended by the Bible verse on the bottom of the receipt and would not be back. He paid for her meal...gave her $10 for a $7 meal.

Another poster on the forum said that she would've been offended too.

WHAT?! I buy gasoline from people who do not believe as I do. I stay in motels that are owned by people of different beliefs. I purchase clothes and various other items from people who worship differently from me...or don't worship at all. I would never dream of telling them that I was insulted by a religious icon or quote from one of their religious leaders in THEIR store. Nor would I say anything about displaying a flag from their native country. I would be more apt to ask, "Oh, where are you from?"

But if a cross is displayed. Or a Bible is on the counter. Or I say "God bless you." Or an American flag is flying. THIS IS INSULTING?!

When did EVERYTHING become acceptable except for Christianity or country pride in the United States of America?! EVERYTHING else can be jammed down our throats, but if we have a Bible verse printed on the bottom of a receipt in OUR store that is not acceptable?!

Where do we live?

In America where soldiers have died for our freedoms...

...or in some middle eastern country where people are killed because they do not believe in the 'state' religion?

Roadside Ramblings

Remember this photo? Here's what Sam did with the beefed up jack hammer...It took less than one day to bust up the concrete pad. A whole lot better time than if he'd gone at it with a sledge hammer!! When the rubble is gone, he intends to make a gentler slope. His brother wants the rubble to control some creekside erosion. So...

LOOK! I have two new things! A new hummingbird feeder and...a Japanese maple to replace the Mountain Laurel I had to remove. The laurel required sweet soil. Did you see the azaleas? Acidic soil. I would add lime to the soil around the laurel and an iron supplement for the acid around the azaleas. LOL And I truly thought it might work. Not!

Oh. Funny story time. We bought the maple at Lowes. I was on one side of the trees, Sam on the other. A man - customer - walked by me and said, Oh. Those are synthetic Japanese maples. Excuse me? Yes. Real Japanese maples that size are $500.

Well. It was the right color and in a price range I was willing to shell out. The label stated it was a Japanese maple. I said something to Sam. The man realized... Hey...she's with someone. So he buggied on off and even said something to Sam about the trees. I leaned over to Sam. "He doesn't know what he's talking about." ;o)

After I got home, I did a search on the variety of maple that I came home with. It is the original variety brought to the USA in the late 1780s and cultivated in a nursery on Long Island! LOL

More azaleas are blooming. One of the three bushes here hasn't burst open yet. Be sure to check out my hosta...The bluebonnets in the bed are about to explode. Can't wait until they bloom down by the road! Yippee!!

We made two more purchases at Lowes. Live oaks. They aren't synthetic either...the Latin name had Virginiana in it...True Southern live oaks. ;o) Hmmm...Can't see them very clear here. So here's a close-up.Another variety of daffodils blooming. On the way to Mama's for a visit, I had to pull over and inhale the heady scent of wisteria. It's gone WILD and crazy on both sides of the road through here. I would love to have a vine (and know where to get it too!) but I can't handle this out of control-ness. Indian Paintbrush. Not very good photos of dogwoods speckled throughout.

Then...there is THIS! Both sides of the railroad track. I live in an area of trashy TRASHY people... And a county without a landfill... That won't set up dumpsters for tax-paying county residents to dispose of garbage like T H I S!!! I deserve to be a Cranky Old Woman today!
